A Semi-Sized Storm

A trucker sent in this photo of an ice-covered truck today near Vinita, OK. The ice and snow storm has been moving along the I-40 corridor, and has spurred weather warnings throughout the South.

A Man with a Mission

OOIDA member Dexter Brown stopped in at headquarters this week; he's shown here posing with Sherry Murry of Land Line Now. Right now, Dexter is part of the U.S. Air Force. Meanwhile, he plans to help OOIDA staffers prepare care packages for his fellow troops paid for by the OOIDA Truckers for Troops Telethon.

Flying in from the Windy City ...

OOIDA members Bill and Jill Carsey talk with Mark Reddig, Sherry Murry and other OOIDA staffers during a quick visit to headquarters this week. The Carseys, who are from the Chicago area, regaled the staff with stories about the casino near their home, and also of their unique - and very effective - home security arrangements. Friendly faces on a foggy day

Kim and Tony Haan pose for a picture during their visit to OOIDA headquarters today. We had quite a conversation with Tony and Kim, both of whom have worked hard to keep in contact with their elected officials and others.

They are the first truckers we've visited with here who have all disc brakes in their tractor - and they love them.

Tony, who also has experience as a mechanic with cars and light trucks, says the improvement in braking distance is much greater than he expected. And he says that because of structural differences between the discs and the old drum brakes, it's likely that inspectors will issue far fewer brake violations once the new type becomes more common.

A Gift of Music from the Heart

Land Line Now Host Mark Reddig, OOIDA member Billy Pettibone and OOIDA staffer Connie Beacraft post in front of an American flag at OOIDA headquarters. Billy stopped in to visit, and to sing a song he wrote in honor of the OOIDA Truckers for Troops Telethon.
Billy's song was especially meaningful to Connie, who is deeply involved in the care package effort, and is also the mother of a soldier who has served overseas.

Billy sings one of several tunes he performed for OOIDA staffers, including one about the earthquake tragedy in Haiti, one about his home state of South Dakota, and one about the Truckers for Troops Telethon. OOIDA staffer Kerry Evans-Spillman can be seen in the foreground.

Bill sings while several OOIDA staffers listen on. Pictured listening are, at the table from left, Kerry Evans-Spillman, Mark Reddig and Connie Beacraft; standing from left, Jami Jones, Keith Goble, Charlie Morasch, Sandi Soendker and Terry Scruton. Not pictured, but listening just outside of camershot were the remainder of the Land Line Now and Land Line Magazine staffs, plus the staff of OOIDA's Membership Department, who took calls from truckers during the Telethon.

A man with many interesting titles ...

OOIDA member Ken Cramer stopped in to visit association headquarters in Grain Valley, MO, this week. Ken has some of the most ... unusual ... business cards we've ever seen, listing a number of, shall we say, unique services (used cars, land, whiskey, manure, nails, flyswatters, racing forms and bongos are all on the list). We give Ken an "A" for originality.
