Here’s another in a series of thank-you letters from the military personnel who receive care packages through OOIDA Truckers for Troops, paid for by your donations.
We haven’t talked much during the telethon about the folks who assemble those care packages sent out from OOIDA as part of Truckers for Troops. But let me take a few moments to explain just how much thought and care goes into those boxes.
Most of the crew are staff here at OOIDA headquarters; a lot of members also stop in to help.
They try to secure donations – after all, every item we can get donated means we have more money for special items that cost a bit more, but that our military folks truly appreciate.
Second, the packages are put together in an assembly line that would do Henry Ford proud. Various products are measure out so that as much as possible is included while not going over the weight limit.
But the process starts with building a list of what should go into the care packages.
Rather than relying on some pre-built list, our folks built one by talking with soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines in the field – the folks who will receive those packages. We asked what they would find useful, what would increase comfort, what would provide them with some small amount of entertainment to relieve the pressure of being in a war zone.
And if you want to know the results of that process, just listen to think thank-you letter.
Just a note to let you I received your latest package, and once again, it was the talk of the entire unit.
Your care packages have been picked apart more than any other care package we receive.
And all the soldiers in my unit thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
I am finished with my deployment, but just wanted to let you know how much your care packages brightened our day, and how much buzz your packages generated.
The unit that is replacing us was talking about your care package after they saw it, telling other people in their unit about it … you’ve definitely hit the nail on the head when it comes to knowing what soldiers really want and need!
Thanks again,
Staff Sergeant Stephen Gilson
U.S. Army
As we hear from members of our military who received care packages from OOIDA’s Truckers for Troops effort, we will share them with you on our Web site.
