  • “The town of Mount Vernon, IL, recently decided to enact a tax on diesel. The tax was also put on several other things in the town, but, curiously, did not include gasoline. So diesel was the only fuel singled out. Mount Vernon has been a typically trucker friendly town in the past, but this latest move has a lot of truckers saying they aren’t going to Mount Vernon anymore. So what about you? Is Mount Vernon someplace you regularly go to? And will this new tax be enough to make you stop going?”

Kent, Washington police asking for help – Terry Scruton reported that police are asking for assistance in the whereabouts of Vinod Chandra Ram in connection with the theft of more than 55,000 gallons of diesel fuel. APU Grant Money Available in Wisconsin - The state of Wisconsin has grant money it wants to hand out to truckers for idle reduction equipment – but with the application deadline only weeks away, only about 70 people have applied so far. Up to $500,000 has been set aside for small business truckers—with the grants paying up to 50 percent of the cost of an APU or other idle-reduction technology. State update – Reed Black spoke with Land Line Magazine’s Keith Goble about state legislation. In Pennsylvania, Gov. Ed Rendell signed a bill into law this week that authorizes the state to borrow $350 million to quicken repairs on more than 400 bridges throughout the state. ON THE LAND LINE NOW BLOG: BMI trouble – Mark Reddig has spoken out several times against a federal proposal to require all truckers over a certain body mass index to undergo yearly testing for sleep apnea.

UCR Registration – Some OOIDA members who operate on their own authority are among the motor carriers, brokers and freight forwarders who must register under the Unified Carrier Registration Program. Failure to register can result in steep fines — and enforcement began on July 1. If you have not registered yet, you need to take immediate action. You can:

  • Contact your state vehicle registration office;
