Air date: Jan. 20, 2006 – Recently we reported on the efforts by some Georgia cities to reduce the time diesel-powered vehicles can idle. The state’s Environmental Protection Division is zeroing in on buses, but trucks could soon be part of any ruling. Air date Jan. 19, 2005California’s Port of Oakland has set up a truck replacement program, which will use grant money to help owners of 1986 or older rigs replace their trucks with 1999 or newer models. The program is expected to replace about 60 trucks. For more information, call (510) 627-1380. To qualify, truck owners must be able to demonstrate that their vehicles have been operated in the Port of Oakland continuously for the past two years and have been used to haul containers for at least 400 trips during the past 12 months. Drivers who live in the port’s local communities may qualify for the grants more easily.

Air date: Jan. 10, 2005 – State Sen. Lisa Boscola of Pennsylvania is sponsoring a bill that would fine truckers and other drivers if all surfaces of their vehicles are not cleared of snow and ice. Air date: Jan. 6, 2006 – In the wake of FMCSA notices about operating authority paperwork, many BOC-3 holders have been bombarded by solicitors implying the truckers face gigantic penalties and government sanctions unless they take immediate action to make their BOC-3 current. This usually involves paying a third party a hefty fee. Don’t be taken in by these offers. First, contact the FMCSA at (202) 385-2423 to find out if your BOC-3 is out of date. If it is and you are an OOIDA member, the Association’s Business Services department can help you do an electronic update free of charge. Call OOIDA at 1-800-444-5791 and ask for Business Services.
